East Island Road-trip

Today, my parents and I decided to make the most of the car and tour the whole island in a day. We started at our accommodation in Saint Pierre (south) driving anti-clockwise around the island toward Saint Denis (north). On our journey we stopped at the many viewpoints, including Manapany and the trails of lava from past volcano eruptions.

These lava trials range from eruptions occurring in 1986, to 2007. It is fascinating to see how quickly organisms have grown on top of the lava, but also to see the vast impact it had. Making the eruptions easy to imagine.

We stopped for lunch at Anse des Cascades located in the Sainte-Rose region. Here we found a beautiful nature reservation, with thousands of palms trees, waterfalls coming out of the sides of the cliffs, and the sea crashing against the rocks. It was like a scene from Jurassic Park and there were even a fair few white-tailed tropicbirds flying about!

We then continued our drive, past the Notre Dame des Laves Church (the only building that survived the 1997 volcano eruption in its area), and past the suspension bridge of the east river of Sainte-Anne. Eventually we arrived in Saint Denis (where I had to take an exam for my university) and we had dinner at Vapiano's followed by a night time drive back to Saint Pierre round the west of the island.
