Barcelona is one of my favourite cities, not only because of its relaxed and chilled way of life, but also because it has plenty of things to do there. Here's a few of my favourite places to visit and activities to do in Barcelona...
1. Barceloneta Beach
Barceloneta is the first of the Barcelona beaches and can therefore get quite busy during the summer months. Its easy to access and has some nice beach bars alongside.
2. La Sagrada Familia
A Giant Basilica designed by the master architect Antonio Gaudí. This building has been under construction since 1882 and they've still got another 30 to 80 years (depending on funding and resources) to go before it will be finished.
Some people love the Sagrada Familia and some people hate it but whatever you think I guarantee it will cause a reaction one way or the other.
For me, its uniqueness, boldness and shear size make it a breathtaking experience.
3. Park Güell
Park Güell is a wonderful large park designed by Antoni Gaudí. You can enter the park free of charge however there is also an area called the "Monumental Area" which you would have to pay to get into. When you visit the park you will see amazing stone structures, colourful ceramic tiles and the house were Gaudí lived. You can easily spend half a day on a visit to this park.
Good to know: the park is 200m up a steep hill so be prepared to add an extra 20 minutes walk to your journey there.
4. Picasso Museum
The museum has arranged Picasso's paintings in chronological order from his early days to his final works. Arranging the paintings in this way gives you a fascinating insight into the development of Picasso thinking over time and shows how he developed the distinctive designs that he is famous for today. A popular art gallery.
5. Walking Tour
Visit Plaça de Catalunya and see lots of people in purple tops promoting their walking tours. This are brilliant, with each tour being interesting and unique, find out something about the history of Barcelona. Often free but recommended donations, these tours can be as cheap or expensive as you want them to be.
6. Cable Car
One of the many ways to discover Barcelona 'from above' is by cable car. There are two in Barcelona, one cable car and one funicular. The funicular, I wouldn't recommend, since it simply travels through some trees up the mountain. However the cable car, Transbordador Aeri del Port, that goes from the port to the mountain is much more fun with good views and a rocky ride over the sea.
7. Castell de Montjuïc
173 metres above the port, this castle is not only a clear representation of the city's history but also provides a perfect viewpoint of the city. Visit via cable car (as mentioned above) or walk up through the gardens and down past the olympic park.
8. Olympic Park
Estadi Olímpic is a sports arena that was constructed in 1927. The stadium was originally built in preparation for the International Expo in 1929. It was then renovated in 1989 for the Summer Olympics in 1992.
This may not sound that exciting to be on this list however personally, I feel the walk there is peaceful and chilled and its pretty interesting to see the whole park.
9. Port Vell
With the Maremagnum building situated in the middle, containing shops, restaurants and an aquarium, Port Well has a peaceful boardwalk around the edge. Visit this in the early morning since its less busy then and seeing the boats and the early sun can be quite relaxing.
10. Magic Fountains of Montjuïc
This light, music and water extravaganza is a fun activity for the evenings. Research in advance when it runs since it varies depending on the time of year.
