A strange post perhaps, but a little insight into something cultural in La Réunion.
One thing I noticed from the very start of my stay here was how popular the graffiti was. Art is on almost every wall, whether it be a spray-painted name to a fully drawn scenic mural. However one image in particular kept catching my attention since it featured all over the island.
Le Gouzou, a little orange character without a face, hands or feet. And the artist behind this character - Jace. Born in 1973, Jace is now well-known all over the island for his graffiti of this little character, but his works can also be found dotted about all over the world.
He paints his little Gouzou in cute, funny and sometimes quite clever scenes. The idea of his street art is to bring his character to life, to surprise his viewers and convey important (or unimportant) messages.
