Last weekend I visited Saint André, a town in the east of the island to celebrate Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights.
The trip was organised by the university, and involved taking a coach to and from Saint André. We left campus at 12:30, and first took a trip to a Hindu temple. This took me by surprise, I've seen these temples dotted all over the island, but never thought I'd be able to take a look inside. I felt almost honoured to view this place people deem as sacred. The temple we visited was called 'Temple Ti Bazar', and as we looked around the evident observation made was how colourful it was; everywhere was painted in different colours and in elaborate ways. We learnt a bit about the religion and the significance of a peacock, since there was one was wondering the grounds of the temple.
After walking through the Indian markets and grabbing some yummy local curry, we went and found a space in the centre, ready for the parade. The parade was beautiful, with large colourful floats passing by, along with people singing, dancing or playing a variety of instruments. You could really see why it is called the festival of light.
This was followed by some more dancing performances at a stage in a nearby park, and fireworks! I felt so privileged to be able to celebrate and experience this festival, especially since its something I've never seen first hand before.
