The time has come for me to pack my bags and reflect on my 4 months in Reunion Island. I have certainly learnt a lot from staying here and would say I've been very lucky to stay on such a beautiful island.
The island itself is probably one of the most diverse places I've ever been to. The presence of this tolerance toward other religions, races and ethnicities is crazy and the island has its own language and has a beautiful sense of community. From this I've learnt that England perhaps still has a lot to learn. I don't feel that we are as developed as Reunion Island in regards to this cultural tolerance and it is an example we should definitely follow.

The geographical features of the island has also made my experience here amazing. I've been able to spend every weekend, and free weekday, visiting a mountain, waterfall or beach. This has admittedly made my trip feel more like an extended summer holiday than an academic year abroad but it has enabled me to discover the island thoroughly and appreciate the nature and culture. I've been able to learn about the grand raid, the music and dance of the island and visit some cultural markets.
And on a personal level I'd say I'm actually quite proud of myself. I've never left home for such a long period of time, so learning to look after myself and deal with being so far from family is an achievement in itself. But also the fact that I've just been living in a foreign island thousands of metres away from home, discovering a new place all on my own, has been a huge accomplishment. I've gained so much independence and confidence. I know I can communicate now in another language and look after myself in a foreign country. And of course I've improved my communication skills, speaking in another language to different people about anything and everything.
